The Seduction of Porn on Our Kids
Did you know that the average age for a child to view porn for the first time is age 11? We use to believe it was only targeted for the male adults. Not anymore.
Some teens accidentally get exposed to it. For example, when I got my daughter her first phone which was an android phone, I was shocked to find how many porn apps the phone provider adds onto the phone. Yes, they give you kids games, reading options, internet use, cool tools and more, but you never expect to actually see a visual app that has half-naked couples fondling each other or a half-dressed woman in a sexual pose right there for your teen to click on. I tried to get rid of them so that she wouldn’t be exposed to them but some were too difficult to disable.
But recently my daughter and I had a conversation in the car the other day about porn. It came up in our discussion because we were talking about someone we knew that might have been affected by it. Once a person has been exposed to it, it changes that person.
Being truthfully honest with me, she opened up and shared how she too innocently viewed porn on the internet when I wasn’t home. She was only 9 at the time. She was curious as to how her body was different from others and why she looked different. So she began to look up sites about woman’s bodies. What she got was an eye full of mass nakedness and sexual perverseness that she wasn’t expecting. She said that she can never forget those images.
The stages of someone viewing porn for the first time and kicking off those hormones in a major way to an addictive and violent behavior was a very frank discussion. I began to share with her the degenerating process in which repeated behaviors that happen over time can bring severe developmental changes in the brain that bring on negative, compulsive addictions. Those addictions can easily turn into serious issues of pedophilia and even mass murder such as the case of Ted Bundy.
Porn is so addictive that once a teen or younger child has viewed it, it becomes quickly an obsessive issue in which they can’t stop. Now with the arrival of sexting among teenagers, the porn industry has grown stronger. You may have noticed that I have not once specifically said that I didn’t refer to a particular gender and where this issue is more problematic. In fact, the issue is almost equal for teen boys and girls being exposed as well as addicted to porn.
