ELLO, it’s more like GOODBYE!

Ello, It's More Like Goodbye - Anchor Of Promise

Recently a new site has been making waves to out-do the most infamous social site, Facebook. With ELLO in the wings to take upon those who have flown the coop from Facebook, it has also been making quite a few choices that are sending red flags to parents.

Although ELLO is now apparently an “invitation only” site, that will not stop teens from finding a way on there. One of the biggest issues for parents is the acceptance of Porn on the site. To quote Ello’s posting rules –

NSFW (Not Safe For Work) Used to describe Internet content generally inappropriate for the typical workplace, i.e., would not be acceptable in the presence of your boss and colleagues (as opposed to SFW, Safe For Work) flagging in is development. This policy will go into effect as soon as flagging is completed. We respect the diverse views of the Ello community. Not everyone wants to see porn. If you regularly post adult-oriented content, please respect those in our community who do not wish to see it by flagging your profile NSFW.

Recently, Mr. Budnitz, the founder of ELLO, stated for the BetaBeat.com article – “We don’t have a problem with porn at all,” Mr. Budnitz said. “But we would have a problem with bestiality or porn that encourages people to hurt each other, or anything that has to do with children.”  Anything of that nature, and you’re likely to get banned immediately. Otherwise, porn it up!

There is also the issue of privacy as well. At this point, it is not completely private which Facebook does allow. The point is this, teens who join whether openly or sneakingly, their information will not be completely private AND they will have more access to porn type material. So, no matter WHAT Mr. Budnitz has to say, it is very obvious that he is not concerned about the welfare of teens or children who can so easily join or hack into websites, including social sites such as the one he has founded.

As a parent, being in control of what is going on with your teen’s computer sites (since they are minors) and their phone sites (again, because they are minors), you need to take an active role to make sure they are not an ELLO member. There is so much more I can say in my reasoning for not promoting Mr. Budnitz website, but that will have to be on another day.
